The AS1 Programme brings together all the experience that we have in this field. The Evidence informed “AS1” curriculum makes use of the science of active bystander-ship and aims to support organisations to fully embed peer intervention and culture change from the top down and the ground up.

The face to face and discussive delivery of the curriculum supports past research that suggests a need build unity around social norms as well as redefining what it means to be loyal in a workplace or team.

Any organisation which manages any form of risk would benefit from this curriculum. Why? Because it simply aims to activate friends and colleagues to act as soon as harm becomes evident.

Harm from poor behaviours is often the focus for organisations. What about mistakes? They are a normal part of the human condition, but they can also lead to harm against a range of individuals as well as the organisation itself.

Poor mental health is of concern to many people and can lead to poor performance as well as poor behaviour. We believe that addressing mental health issues will also help address the impact of mistakes and poor behaviours. Healthier staff make fewer mistakes.

Third parties witness not only poor behaviours but also mistakes and poor wellness. Many friends and colleagues despite noticing harm don’t act often fail to intervene. Many simply don’t know how to start the conversation. The AS1 curriculum simply aims to help friends and colleagues be better friends and colleagues in these situations. The AS1 curriculum is designed to support organisations build, develop and maintain a winning culture.

The AS1 curriculum was piloted with West Yorkshire Police in 2022/23 and evaluated by Buckinghamshire University. The evaluation document presents a highly positive response from officers to the AS1 curriculum. See some qualitative feedback below. It’s clear that this evaluation supports the ongoing research that suggests bystander approaches and peer intervention programmes work.

Two other police forces have now implemented the AS1 curriculum. Others are expected to begin training in 2024. A number of other organisations and settings have expressed an interest in developing this work.

The AS1 curriculum can be delivered as a stand-alone training or through the delivery of a train the trainer programme which would support long term sustainability.
